with USB modem plugged in cannot shutdown the system

ADSL Speedtouch 330 USB modem. When I shutdown the system it waits very long at
the point of killing ppp0 connection, and finally it gives up. Then from
shutting down kbd and all further daemons there is error after error --
input/output error.

The only way to shutdown the system is cold power off and that is why I am
setting status to critical, depending on your filesystem you can loose the data
(because the disks are not unmounted cleanly).

I believe this bug was introduced in -20 or -21 release of the kernel because I
see it after update 19->21. Prior to that, I saw it once or twice but on
special occasions. Now it happens always.
