Summary: ntpd service script alterations (some cosmetical
fixes) and ntptimeset changes to use ntpd -q
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE 10.3
Version: Final
Platform: x86
OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3
Status: NEW
Severity: Enhancement
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Network
AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: angel@xxxxxx

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/3.5) KHTML/3.5.7 (like
Gecko) SUSE
Hi!
ntptimeset uses ntp to set initial time (when no daemon seems to be running)
If you set NTPD_START = no then my script uses ntpd -q (among other settings)
to mimic ntpdate but with this "new" -q switch (as manual page say is future).
As being on 10.3 maybe its outdated and later versioan anr better but if you
find useful please use it.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. /etc/init.d/ntpd ntptimeset
2.
3.
Actual Results:
with NTPD_START = no , no deamon is present.
Network scripts should call it on network changes and optionally cron.hourly
shell script can keep the time provided system time doesnt skew to fast.
Expected Results:
No deemon running, and memory resouces freed.
With sysconfig NTPD_START = yes nomral behaviour is expected (deamon starts and
ntptime set doesnt do anything while is still alive)
List mates on opensuse-es suggest later releases 11.x may have diferent setups
on this script. I dont know, im just fine on 10.3.
