X-server crashes when logging out of KDE

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
select log out or shut down...
Actual Results:  
Either;

a) Display / system freezes and power on button must be pressed 4 seconds, or

b) text console shown (init3). logging in as root and running kwin returns
x-server can not be found
