Let me summarise what you did:

You were using 2 small monitors: 1280x1024 and 1440x900.  
Was this dual-head?  xinerama? xrandr multiple displays? using 1 monitor at a
time?

Then you connected the big 1680x1050 - alone or in place of one of the two
small monitors?

When you tried to login with the 1680x1050, plasma crashed?
