Summary: Installation in extended partition incorrectly changes
boot partition in Master Boot Record (MBR)
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE 11.1
Version: Final
Platform: i686
OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1
Status: NEW
Severity: Normal
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Installation
AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: psherman@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
QAContact: jsrain@xxxxxxxxxx
Found By: ---
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4)
Gecko/2008111317 Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.4
Installed openSUSE 11.1 in an extended partition, changing grub installation
default from the 4th physical partition (containing the extended partitions) to
the target extended partition. After successful install, system would not boot
because the 4th physical partition was set as the active partition. This was a
change from the pre-installation setting of the 2nd physical partition.
Repair procedure: Use a utility program (ie fdisk) to reset the active
partition to its pre-installation setting.
Installation was done this way to facilitate testing openSUSE 11.1 without
impacting anything else on the system. New installation is bootable from
existing grub menu using the chainloader grub statement. If openSUSE doesn't
work out, this makes it easy to completely remove it.
Reproducible: Didn't try
Steps to Reproduce:
1.

3.
I believe I had the same problem installing Fedora 10 around a month ago.
