One way to (maybe) resolve it. Reboot to runlevel 1. Delete /etc/asound.state. 'init 3', then log in as root. In char mode, run aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav. If that sound play worked, then run `alsactl -f <somefile> store`. Now `init 5`. Once logged in, open a konsole window and run `alsactl -f <somefile> restore`. With luck, that will do it. For me (and others) the kmix settings in KDE were fscked, and needed "reset" by the alsactl restore. Good luck!
