Well, Ludwig,
I see your point but I do not think that you are right. openSUSE puts autologin
as default for kde (do not know about gnome, didn't test there), and they put
equal passwords for root and your default user as default, and your're
seriously talking about security issues by allowing a ssh'ed remote access to
use local devices?
Sorry, that's weird. You make it as simple as eating a cherry to delete
everything on the local machine - and in the very same moment you're telling
about security implications from an ssh'ed login requiring a password of the
same user on the local device.
And I still think that being forced to become root remotely is much worse than
access - well, to a scanner, to a sound device.
And yes, I see many usecases: my son's PC sits in the room next to me, and if
there are issues I log in here and there and check in parallel. And I can do
the same with my sister's PC living 10 km apart without being forced to be
root. I can put her sane-output to my face and judge what is going wrong and
why things happen as they do. I could prolong this list easily.
And to see errors that people see locally without being forced to ask them
complicated questions is worth a lot. If you're root you'll never ever see
issues with device access, and if you forbid remote access in this manner you
cannot test from remote as you know that it will not work and you won't get the
same picture that a local user gets when stumbling across whatsoever.
So, I'd suggest at least providing an option to set a variable allowing ssh'ed
remote logins to gain access to local devices.
Just my two cents here ...
I do not see this closed. This is nothgin but making people's work harder with
nothing won.
Take care
Dieter
