I would not expect it to show anything. Think about this:
User logs on and the old .xsession-errors file is erased and a new one started.
A problem occurs that kills the session and the User has to login again.
What is going to happen immediately? Answer: The last .xsession-errors file
is erased and a new one started. So any trace of the original problem is
erased.
The only way that .xsession-errors is going to give any information is if you
chance the way it works so that the last previous .xsession-errors file is not
erased, and the next session is appended to it.
There should be a way to do that. What causes .xsession-errors to be erased?
It is probably in a startup script somewhere. It should be easy to change.
