https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=465203 Summary: Bad signal strength in knetworkmanager Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: RC 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Joseph.Comfort@asu.edu QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008121300 SUSE/3.0.5-1.1 Firefox/3.0.5 Build Identifier: Hardware is a HP/Compaq nx6325 with a Broadcom bcm4312 wireless card. It is working with the ssb/b43 driver setup. (But one first needs a ethernet connection to set it up.) I have installed 11.1 with KDE 3.5. To keep things from becoming messed up, all KDE4 packages were removed except for the kupdatemanager (the only way to get the system tray icon and/or functionality). With fresh NetworkManager rpms (base, qlib, kde), the signal strength as shown in the icon is fine. Many neighborhood connections are also visible. If I log out and switch users, or just shut down, and come back, the signal strength is low, even though the access point is just 1 meter away. Usually no other access points show. Running nm-tool at that point shows many connections available, all with the correct strengths. If I reinstall the NetworkManager rpms and restart the network, all is well. But it does not last. Most likely, I will not be able to make a connection if I am at some distance from an access point, although the actual strength is good. This will be a serious problem.
