Workarounds for information (but they're not very useful ones):
Workaround 1: If I boot to runlevel 3, log in as a normal user and execute the
command "vncserver" in the console, then TightVNC starts nicely and serves a
KDE4 desktop to client machines.
Workaround 2: I installed Gnome alongside KDE4, to see whether I could serve
KDE4 desktops from Gnome. If I start "vncserver" in Gnome it serves a working
KDE4 desktop to client machines.
I think that these examples work because running instances of klauncher get in
the way when attempting to serve KDE4 in TightVNC from within a working KDE4
environment, but in runlevel 3 or in a Gnome environment there are no running
instances of klauncher getting in the way. So it seems the cause is clearer
now.
