https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=458203 Summary: Computer freeze without apparent cause Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: helbert2a@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- I have an strange problem. Sometimes my laptop freezes without apparent cause. The LED Hard Disk use indicator in on all time. I can't run any application from "computer" menu. If an gnome-terminal was opened before computer freeze, I log in as root (su) and run the command # shutdown -r now bash: /sbin/shutdown: Input/Output error I need to force to power off. High probability of occurrence is when * I'm surfing the web. * The system resume from hibernate (suspend to disk) * I move it. Maybe, it is due to the hard disk protection (G-sensor) of my vaio laptop, I think. * I connect or disconnect the AC power cord. If the computer has been without battery for a time period, an after I put the battery an starts the system, the problem high probability to occur. For example, yesterday evening the computer does not had battery. Today morning I put the battery and starts the system, and after half hour the system freeze. The /var/log/message for this worn operation period is messages_Dec-10-morning.txt. Note that ata3.00: error: { ICRC ABRT } was reported. But, if that error was not reported the problem could occur too, because in the afternoon that error was not reported and the system freeze again (message_Dec-10-afternoon.txt). I had read in some forums that a damage SATA cable may cause this problem. I think that SATA cable is not the problem because under windows this problem not occur. Another potential cause may be bad blocks in hard disk, but I had tested the disk using badblocks command and SeaTool (from Sea Gate) and any has been found bad blocks. I had found a similar bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/217920 but is my case, ata3.00: error: { ICRC ABRT } is not reported always after system freeze, only sometimes.
