Steffen:
I have done what you asked, now unsurprisingly an egrep -i pdc202 of all the
files in /etc/modprobe.d has exactly same result as on the installed system,
nothing found, no match. This is probably because it's copied from the Live CD
image.
Same as always before, udev does a probe with pata_amd and pata_pdc202xx_old,
which presumably loads the modules into kernel memory proper from the initrd.
Just for luck, I added brokenmodules=pata_pdc202xx_old
broken_modules=pata_pdc202xx_old.
So Live CD's look like they're too inflexible. They are the method that is
encouraged the most, on the download site.
Now I am trying the Net install version, and this time udev reports both
drivers pata_pdc202xx_old, pdc202xx and suggests using the brokenmodules=
parameter if a driver doesn't work for me. There's also a 'driver' function
which looks like it can try to load modules from a disk partition or removable
media. It reminds me of SuSE-6.2 but it seems to have avoided loading
pata_pdc202xx_old and loaded pdc202xx_old instead.
