Simon,
First, in the application browser, you can right-click on an App, then Add To
Favorites. That will add the App to the main menu.
Second, please run the following from a terminal;
# pkill main-menu
You will get an error dialog about the main menu, leave this open for now.
Run this is the terminal;
# /usr/lib/gnome-main-menu/main-menu
Then, on the error dialog, click reload
Go to the search field and enter a search term, then hit enter
Did you get any output in the terminal? Please paste it in this bug report.
