It works for me with the newest packages
sane-backends, hplip, and yast2-scanner.

Before others can test it, make sure that
you have the right newest packages installed
where the RPM changelogs contain this:

sane-backends:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
* Wed Dec 03 2008 lnussel@xxxxxxx
- use "usb" instead of "usb_device" (bnc#438867)
---------------------------------------------------------------------

hplip:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
* Wed Dec 03 2008 lnussel@xxxxxxx
- use "usb" instead of "usb_device" (bnc#438867)
---------------------------------------------------------------------

yast2-scanner:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
* Thu Dec 04 2008 jsmeix@xxxxxxx
- V 2.17.5
- Since openSUSE 11.1 'usb_device' must be replaced by 'usb' in
HAL fdi files (see Novell/Suse Bugzilla bnc#438867).
Adapted test_and_set_scanner_access_permissions so that it
works for openSUSE 11.1 and is still to some extent
backward compatible with openSUSE 11.0.
