The easiest solution is to add snd-intel8x0m to blacklist. Just add the
following line to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist or whatever.
blacklist snd-intel8x0m
In the earlier version, this was listed there, so the problem was hidden.
But, the real question is what is the cause. Your guess may be right. This
should be the interaction of snd-intel8x0m.
Do I understand correctly that the sound is working even with snd-intel8x0m
loaded after you edit /etc/modprobe.d/sound in comment #2? Check
/proc/asound/cards whether intel8x0m is really loaded after "rcalsasound
restart".
If yes, the loading order is the issue indeed. You can change the order
snd-card-0 and -1, do "rcalsasound restart", and test the second card via
"aplay -vv -Dplughw:1 foo.wav" in order to confirm your theory.
Anyway, please run /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh with --no-upload option on both
working and non-working states, and attach the generated files.
