I have taken my daughters PC and installed that one in the exact same manner.
Here there is no problem with the keys. So this problem must somehow be related
to HW. The install was done from the same DVD.

I'll try your request. What data shall be outoput from the test and what shall
I look for?

I'm also trying to run startx under strace to see if I can get anything
sensible from that.

will the global xinitrc and xinitrc.common in /etc/X11/xinit always be used?
