In addition, does the user-chooser need to have such a huge icon? I'm guessing
there's usually some sort of avatar in there, with this icon being a fallback.

You're guessing right.

What is the size of that graphic? I'd like to provide something more subtle.

The code tells me:

#define ICON_SIZE 96

Another issue with this login screen: at the top near the main icon, the
computer's hostname is shown. The problem is that for the majority of our
users
who use Automatic Configuration and don;t set a custom hostname, it'll end up
saying something like "linux-i6nd", which is gibberish to most users. Would it
not be better to change it to a more understandable message (e.g. "Welcome to
openSUSE!") or remove the text altogether?

You can play with /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/banner_message_enable and
/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/banner_message_text (although you'll need to set the
default values in the system to have this working).
