Finally I found a way to reproduce your problem. It happens when
GTK_IM_MODULE is unset, i.e. I can reproduce it with:
env -u GTK_IM_MODULE LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 acroread
You already wrote in comment #3 that you have GTK_IM_MODULE unset but
I didn't think this could be the reason.
You can fix this easily by setting GTK_IM_MODULE=xim.
export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim
Then it works.
But I wonder why GTK_IM_MODULE isn't already set to xim for you.
GTK_IM_MODULE=xim is the default if no special input method is
installed.
Can you please attach your ~/.xsession-errors file?
This file should contain some messages like
/etc/X11/xim: Checking whether an input method should be started.
/etc/X11/xim: user environment variable LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
sourcing /etc/sysconfig/language to get the value of INPUT_METHOD
INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method).
Trying to start a default input method for the locale de_DE.UTF-8 ...
There is no default input method for the current locale.
or similar messages which would tell us which input settings were
setup by default in your case. Maybe we can find out then what went
wrong.
