I guess I'm hitting the same issue. So far I have tracked it down to the
following.
1. DPMS disabled.
If DPMS is disabled in xorg.conf any dpms call (xset dpms force off) will kill
X. This is probably related.
2. DPMS enabled.
If X is running without DE (here: without GNOME) everything is fine. xset dpms
force {off,on} works fine.
However, gnome-power-manager (gpm) is doing something which X seems not to be
happy about.
As long as gpm is not running, I can not reproduce the issue.
However, if gpm is running, the following can be reproduced:
* set the timeout for switching off the display to a low value
* wait until the timeout kicks in
* X dies
I'll attach some strace.
