I ran a sudo zypper remove -t pattern gnome-desktop (it may not have been
gnome-desktop, but one of the gnome ones for sure) and the resolvible was that
it wanted to remove kernel-pae. 

kernel and other "critical" portions should not be included in pattern for
gnome or kde. Rather there should be a seperate pattern created "core" or make
it only a base pattern requirement and NOT tie in, in ANYWAY to DE patterns.
