[Bug 414466] New: Disk cache is extremely large
- From: bugzilla_noreply@xxxxxxxxxx
- Date: Mon, 4 Aug 2008 14:02:08 -0600 (MDT)
- Message-id: <bug-414466-21960@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/>

Summary: Disk cache is extremely large
Product: openSUSE 11.0
Version: Final
Platform: i686
OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0
Status: NEW
Severity: Major
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Basesystem
AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: cime_now@xxxxxxxxxxx
QAContact: qa@xxxxxxx
Found By: Customer
I have an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ on a KT400 motherboard with 512MB (recognized)
RAM installed and a CD-R drive and one hard-drive on a single IDE channel. When
I viewed the memory usage, it shows 227MB being consumed for "disk cache" in my
physical memory, another 64MB being used for applications (this was viewed when
I had no application other than Ksysinfo which I was using to view the memory
usage) - this doesn't leave me with very much memory to use for 'real'
applications like GIMP or OpenOffice.Org.
I have searched all the available tools and can't find anything that would
allow me to change the size of the disk cache.
On my system, this is close to being unacceptable - half the applications I use
run slower than snail-snot because their processes have to be paged to the swap
area.
Hope I've given you enough info.
Thank You;
Jim
