Well, it seems that Gnome's "Dim display when idle" is causing problems. I can
adjust the screen brightness manually without any issues. Booting the default
11.0 kernel without any special boot params and disabling Gnome's "Dim display
when idle" for both AC and battery power seems to eliminate the problem.
I do, however, *occasionally* get the following messages when switching from AC
to battery power. It doesn't happen every time. There is a display brightness
change when going back & forth between AC & battery power as well.
