It looks like you need to start mousetweaks before this starts happening:
Computer -> Control Center -> Mouse -> Accessibility -> Trigger secondary click
by holding down the primary button
Once it's been started, clicking the desktop will (quickly) result in death of
the X session.
After that point, it more reliably crashes when clicking on the desktop in
future logins.
