I can somewhat reproduce this. In xev I get (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol) for the
umlauts. The reason is that by default us keyboard layout is used.
# setxkbmap -print
xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes { include "xfree86+aliases(qwerty)" };
xkb_types { include "complete" };
xkb_compat { include "complete" };
xkb_symbols { include "pc+us" };
xkb_geometry { include "pc(pc105)" };
};
After switching to german the umlauts work again.
--> setxkbmap "de(nodeadkeys)"
The VNC Server on 10.3 didn't support the XKB extension. Therefore you didn't
run into this problem. Disabling XKB extension in Xvnc ("-kb") makes the
situation worse. So this is not an option. Desktops like KDE/Gnome have
frontends for keyboard configuration via XKB, so I don't think this is a big
deal. Otherwise use setxkbmap.
Does this help?
