No, it cannot work with PA. Either the signal wasn't routed through PA, or you
smoked :-)
The ALSA "default" PCM was overridden by PA first on RC1. It wasn't so, and
thus normal dmix was before RC1 (and thus it worked only when PA doesn't play
sounds). Now, PA always takes the control -- so it doesn't work any more. On
RC2 and later, this won't be a problem on KDE because alsa-plugins-pulse isn't
activated as default. But, on GNOME, the problem remains.
Unfortunately my patch won't get into 11.0 alsa package because it's too late.
That's why you don't see on any repos.
Take the packages from the mbuild directories above (in Nuremberg devel
network).
