Not sure who's supposed to put this in in Charles' absence - Lynn?

The non-debug build hang had been fixed a month ago, but the fix wasn't picked
up for whatever reason. The debug build's assert required tweaking that fix a
little more, so above patch (replacing the one we've got in there) now
addresses both.
