I found a way to reproduce it with the RC2 KDE4 Live CD.
1) Start off like in bug 396995,
2) ((run opensuseupdater-kde as user - but even that may be unnecessary. It
will run yast to add an update repo. But I realized that it is already in
zypper, but disabled, so I quit YaST and..))
3) as root said zypper mr -e openSUSE-11.0-Updates
Maybe (2) is optional
now I get the situation in comment 5.
