Would it be possible to add some logic into linuxrc that will, say, catch line ERRORMGS='no image found for this machine, contact LDAP administrator' in config.<MAC>, and regardless other settings display this message on screen before any destructive changes are made (like harddrive partitioning)? It should probably wait for user input or for timeout, and then shutdown. In general, the idea is to provide user some specific information during linuxrc boot, with the possibility to abort the process, wait for user input, etc. If this is too complicated, it may be sufficient to add a 'postloadconfig' hook at the end of the load configuraton step (#9), provided the config file could be accessed by hook script and no permanent changes to the system are done before it.
