In other words: even if /etc/asound-pulse.conf is the culprit, we'll have still
problems because pulse plugin is enabled as default on GNOME (but not on other
desktops). So, the same situation remains on GNOME.
Can't your code just use normal read/write instead of mmap? If the mmap is
mandatory, a possible workaround is to reopen the PCM as "plug:default" once
after this error happens. This will wrap the default setting again with plug
layer.
But, this shouldn't be used as the primary device because (except for pulse)
"default" setup already contains the plug layer.
Or, it might be better (simpler) to fix the pulse plugin setup.
Try to add the following in you ~/.asoundrc:
pcm.!default "plug:pulse"
