Thanks for your advice, David!
Just let me add that this is not specific to x86_64! The two machines in know
are both laptops with Pentium III M and Pentium M (aka Centrino). They have
different graphics chipsets (ancient Radeon and i855GM), so it should not be
related to any graphics driver or Xorg.
What really bothers me: I have upgrade on of the machines to the very latest
stable KDE packages supplied by openSUSE:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_10.3/
No change!
I did not expect it, but checked nevertheless: Updating Xorg to version 7.3
also did not help:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_10.3/
I am currently downloading 11.0 RC1 in order to check with the supplied KDE
packages there! I have tested KDE4 only, so far, and I suddenly have a very
very bad anticipation...
I'd like to have this a higher priority so I set it to P3.
