The environment and the suspicious part of the process tree

A system was installed from openSUSE 11.0 RC1 DVD media. It was set up to run
KDE3 during the installation. Now I have added GNOME to take a look at the new
version of said desktop environment, but KDM defies the DE selection and starts
KDE3 instead. I have tried starting WindowMaker - the same result, the system
runs KDE3.

See the attached screenshot that suggests that GNOME should probably be running
at the moment of taking this screenshot (according to the system environment).
An interesting tidbit is that YaST2 honors the environment settings and runs
its modules (when run from console) using the Gtk+ GUI. The Control Center does
NOT even start ('** ERROR **: Resource problem creating ' --/orbit-root',
aborting...') from the console, and from the KDE menu, both Control Center and
YaST modules run with Qt GUI.

I never noticed anything like this in oS 10.3. I admit that this part of the
system is beyond my skills to analyze further. Any hints will be appreciated.
