Remember how I said I needed an edit command? This is getting long. ;p
I did some research, and it looks like the 3.AAD firmware version on the Maxtor
drives -does- cause problems like this, though I didn't dig enough to figure
out why. So, I guess a better question would be, is it safe and/or sane to use
the libata.force=9:pio4 option every time I boot into linux (assuming I were to
install it on this system?)
Another note - I was getting this same problem on my old computer I had this
drive attached to, but I wasn't having problems like this under... I believe it
was SuSE 10.2 before a certain patch - couldn't give you an exact point,
unfortunately. Did the way the kernel handle IDE/PATA drives change some time
inside 10.2? (Sorry if I don't know what I'm talking about, but it -seems- to
be a valid question :)
My eventual fix was to just disconnect this drive when I booted it, which was
therefore very seldom. I feel bad now for running y'all around like this on a
problem I (technically) knew was there, and just forgot. =p
