I also have this issue with a Dell E1505.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS,
943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

I usually just xrandr --output VGA --off    to fix it, but this is obviously a
problem for when I want to use a projector
