All APs I have in reach do broadcast their SSID (I have made them do so when
hidden ESSIDs caused loads of trouble with 10.0 or 10.1, don't remember
exactly).
I am using the default driver ipw2100 which is (and ever has been, afaik)
capable of scanning:
linux:~ # iwlist eth1 scan
eth1 Scan completed :
Cell 01 - Address: 00:0D:88:AB:07:6E

At home, the wifi network is WPA secured and I definitely couldn't use it
without specifying the WPA version and the encryption algorithm.
Here, at work, we have a simple, insecure WEP wifi network. When I tell KNM
that I need Wireless Security, it offers WPA-PSK as the default... *Why*
doesn't it properly guess the encryption type any more? This has worked
beautifully in 10.3! Also, there seems to be no longer a simple means to just
browse the available networks and their security measures!
But that's not all: manually switching to WEP offers the standard type
"hexadecimal key". I have mentioned in bug #262966 that the 99% default is very
likely an ASCII key. I have *never* come across a hex key in my life-time :)
So, the bottom line is: KNM/NM have made an incredible huge step backwards in
user-friendliness. I would go so far as to say it is unusable by the average
experienced user. This is in total contrast to its state in 10.3/KDE3.
