https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=390499 Summary: RPMs now LZMA-compressed Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Beta 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Release Notes AssignedTo: coolo@novell.com ReportedBy: suse-beta@cboltz.de QAContact: coolo@novell.com CC: lmichnovic@novell.com Found By: --- 11.0 RPMs are incompatible with older openSUSE distributions because of LZMA compression. This hould be mentioned in the "technical" section of the release notes because - incompatible file format - LZMA offers better compression (see http://en.opensuse.org/LZMA) - several people have already asked why they can't open the RPMs on 10.3 I propose a text like (partly stolen from Ladislav Michnovič's mail in opensuse-factory today): <title>RPMs now LZMA-compressed</title> <para>RPM files in 11.0 now use Lzma compression. LZMA provides a better compression rate and is faster on decompression.</para> <para>The rpm binary in older distributions can't open such rpm files because they use bzip2 decompression only. If you need to open LZMA-compressed RPMs on 10.3, install the "rpm" package from 11.0 on your 10.3 system. $unsupported_warning</para> Needless to say: s/$unsupported_warning/some text/ ;-) @Ladislav: Is the above text correct?
