OK
Have downgraded to Kernel 2.6.22.17-0.1-default i686
Plugged in device after rebooting and it is detected without problem.
I'm very confused.
Looks as if something in the changing the kernel has corrected the problem.
However, isn't the first time I have changed the kernel and it hadn't
previously been fixed (other than comment #34).
Waiting to see if it stays fixed (looking forward to upgrade to Opensuse 11 in
the near future)
