I just encountered very similar breakage on USB flash while working around bug
388248 on openSUSE 10.3 i586.
How to reproduce:
1. Insert USB flash
2. Mount manually (I used "mount -tvfat
-onoexec,nosuid,async,nodev,gid=100,umask=0002,utf8=true,quiet,rw /dev/sda1
/mnt/", but it seems to be reproducible with other arguments as well.)
3. mkdir /mnt/testdir
4. sync
5. umount /mnt
6. sync
7. Wait for sync finished. Wait few additional seconds. Remove the USB flash
Now insert again and you see corrupted data.
Note that only manual umount is affected. If I am using GNOME volume manager to
unmount the medium, I never seen the corruption.
I don't know GNOME volume manager exactly. Is there any other action, which is
not performed when doing steps above?
