So - to add some comedic value, and to apply this to Lubos' great work
accelerating KDE login; here are the numbers before/after for a KDE4 login. The
two stages are from Desktop Manager (GDM) login (final enter key-press), to the
"openSUSE background" showing. Stage 2 is the time until we get into the "entry
sound", and the tooltip dialog comes up:

hostname ok hostname unresolvable
Stage 1 3 secs 52 secs
Stage 2 16 secs 15 secs
Total: 19 secs 67 secs

Numbers taken by hand of course ;-) ie. we manage to make login in total more
than 3 times slower; and the 'Stage 1' more than 15 times slower :-)
I would expect similar numbers for Gnome (FWIW).

Again - to simulate this the best thing to do is to add a non-responding DNS
server in /etc/resolv.conf - since this best simulates the non-response for a
lookup of "linux.site" (or whatever) - which clearly doesn't exist out there on
the net.
