Looking more closely at the beginning of the boot process when irqpoll is NOT
used I find the lines:
irq 22: nobody cared (try booting with the irqpoll option)
then later:
Disabling IRQ #22
Since IRQ #22 is used by the sata_sil driver for my SATA hard disks, it appears
that the hard disk is generating an interrupt before the driver has time to
install its interrupt handler. irqpoll is NOT required when booting 10.2 using
a self compiled vanilla kernel.org 2.6.25 kernel (or any earlier kernel), so it
appears that either SUSE patches to the kernel or the speeded up bootup of 11.0
is causing a race condition. irqpoll slows things down enough so that the race
does not occur. (This is just my uneducated guess -- feel free to disregard
it.)
