What happens for me is this:
1. I enable the "Evolution integration" plug-in in Pidgin.
2. I invoke "Add buddy"
3. The search window comes up.
4. I select an addressbook from the dropdown.
5. If I type the first few letters of a person's first name, the search window
finds that person.
6. But if I type the first few letters of a person's last name instead (or
anything that is not their first name, it seems), I get no search results.
Joe, is that the bug you are seeing? If so, Pidgin needs to ask Evolution to
search in fields other than the first name.
