I know the structure of the symlinks. Let's look at the 4.2 set, ok?
There is gcc package version 4.2 and there is gcc42 package version
4.2-something. Gcc just creates the links to files from gcc42 (as you
described).
My point is there is gcc43 package, but there is no gcc version 4.3
(counterpart package) to set this properly. In other words there is no way to
easily set the gcc 4.3 as the main compiler.
Ability to install several version of the package is nice (despite actual
execution), but it is useful as long as you can actually set the primary set.
Resetting all links manually is a tiresome, errorprone task and should not be
done anyway -- the packages are for that, but as I pointed out, there is no
counterpart package for gcc43 (i.e. there is no gcc version 4.3), thus
reopening.
