can you repeat the comment #16 for the situation after KDE4 start? if
fonts.conf is not modified (which I assume), the other possible explanation is
that you're not starting a gnome app (which starts a gnome-settings daemon and
therefore completely modifies the way the session looks). especially the xrdb
-query output is important.
