okay, lets not add yet another desktop environment to the game of figuring out
what your bug is, please :)

Okay, so after closely looking at your screenshots, I think you're talking
about that for some reason starting systemsettings (or kcminit4 rather) will
switch your fontconfig to enable subpixel hinting on. 

I assume you're not using the freetype2 package from opensuse but one that you
found in packman or in the opensuse buildservice, right?
