Usually the volumes are adjusted at the setup time by YaST, and once after you
adjust the volume, it'll be saved at shutdown / reboot time via alsasound init
script. If not, something other (e.g. kmix) confuses the mixer setup wrongly.
Try to boot in runlevel 3 and check the volume on linux console once.
