I would be quite happy if it did that, but unfortunately it does
*not* adapt correctly in my case. Screen shot follows.

Not using all available space may make sense, especially
for vertical task-bars. For example, I used to make my
vertical taskbar rather wide to be able to read
the names of the windows which are listed in the taskbar.
With KDE3 I made the taskbar 100pixels wide and made
it shift away automatically (not (yet) possible with KDE4).
With a 100 pixel wide taskbar, a 100 pixel wide string
displaying the time

would waste a lot of space vertically in the taskbar as well.
For vertical taskbars, the vertical space is more limited
than the horizontal for horizontal taskbars because
most monitors are wider than high.
