Looks like two separate problems to me.
But I'd wait with a separate report.
It would be great if Holger could comment (->midair collision :) ) about the
powersaved event messages, I am going to tell some Intel guys who touched the
thermal things recently.

This looks suspicious:
Apr  9 14:06:24 rana klogd: Critical temperature reached (88 C), shutting down.
Could you also post /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/trip_points
The critical trip point should be above 90 IIRC on ThinkPads.
Looks (guessing) like a bug we had and fixed long ago..., that the reaction on
an exceeded trip point happens on the next thermal read and until then it's too
late.
