To reproduce

Open an xterm
su
run kwrite
file -> open

Results in "Could not start process Cannot talk to klauncher. Not connected to
D-BUS"

Workaround

After su
run dbus-launch and export the echoed variables before running a KDE4
application.

Alternatively use kdesu instead of su. (or run as root from run dialogue)
