Rasmus Borup Hansen> appears to solve the problem.
But then you get a warning at startup:
mfabian@magellan:~$ LANG=en_US.UTF-8 xemacs
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
mfabian@magellan:~$
The problem is actually a bug in X11, but it is hard to fix there
and probably nobody cares.
