Hello, 
I test ldap autentification on opensuse 11.0 now and it works.
There are some difference in my config file.

nsswitch.conf

group:  files ldap
hosts:  files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns
networks:       files dns
services:       files ldap
netgroup:       files ldap
automount:      files nis
aliases:        files ldap
passwd_compat:  ldap

ldap.conf

TLS_REQCERT     allow
host    ldap.xxx.xx
base    ou=xxx,dc=xxx,dc=xx

I use yast2 for configuration (Network services - Ldap Client)
