So if I understand you correctly, two 1024x768 screens with different physical
sizes (in millimeters) are expected to produce differently sized fonts (in
pixels).
If that is intentional, then I'd like to question the rationale behind it:
* Most people would expect a 12pt font to look identical in terms of pixels on
any screen, *unless* they specify manually to use a different resolution.
* This is especially true for screen designers and for people giving on-screen
presentations (or screencasts, or whatever you can think of).
* As far as I know, this is openSUSE specific. I never experienced the fonts on
these 2 computers to look different using e.g., Ubuntu
* Other OSes, too, do not assume different screen resolutions for the rendering
of fonts. For example, Windows has a "high resolution" mode too that can be
used to render fonts larger, but it has to be enabled manually.
To give you a real world example why the current behavior is frustrating:
I once made a complex OpenOffice.org Impress presentation which looked
perfectly on my Ubuntu machine. Of course I tried to use only fonts that are
available on all Linux distributions. I then gave it to a friend on a openSUSE
machine, and all the fonts sizes were messed up to the point that the
presentation was totally unreadable and had to be re-created almost from
scratch. At that time, I attributed this to some general incompatibility
between Ubuntu and openSUSE, and basically decided not to use OpenOffice
presentations any more since it produced random results.
Knowing about the story behind the calculation of screen fonts, I now think
this could have been avoided if openSUSE always assumed a constand screen dpi
resolution, in line with the other distros.
For the record, my two screens have the following properties:
* 1024x768: 247x185 mm
* 1280x1024: 335x270 mm
